A New Documentary Explores the Politics of 'Bikes vs. Cars'

Swedish filmmaker Fredrik Gertten is deep-diving into the tension between the car industry and the urban biking movement.

Gertten’s work-in-progress documentary “Bikes vs. Cars” investigates what would happen to car sales and oil usage if more cities became like Copenhagen, where 40 percent of the population commutes on a bike daily. The film follows individuals fighting for cyclists, a car commercial director, oil lobbyists, and politicians clinging onto the car owners’ vote. Gertten hopes to release the film in spring 2014, and has turned to Kickstarter to raise money for post-production and promotion.

According to the Kickstarter page, “Bike vs. Cars” is also a call to challenge the politics that keep the car industry a key, thriving part of the economy. So far, plenty of people have left messages of support, but there are also some who are wary of the combative, “us vs. them” nature of the narrative.
